Escape Issue : Extra Vitamins at SF Art Book Fair

アートブックを眺めていると時間が経つのがあっという間。写真、グラフィック、ペイント、様々な表現方法で埋め尽くされた紙面は、私たちを脳内トリップに導いてくれる。良質なアートブックの作り手たちはどんなことを考えてモノづくりしているのだろう。そして彼ら自身はどんな作品をセレクトして購入しているのだろう。良質なブックが集まることで知られるサンフランシスコアートブックフェアに参加した東京の出版レーベル「commune」が、アートブックフェアへの参加方法などを含めたフェアのレポート、参加しているパブリッシャーたちへのインタビューを行ってくれた。第三回目は、グラフィックデザインスタジオExtra Vitaminsを紹介する。

– あなたが運営するパブリッシャーについて教えてください。

Extra VitaminsはJulia BelamarichとKyle Warfieldによるグラフィックデザインスタジオです。アメリカはコロラド州にあるデンバーをベースにしています。私達はジン、服、そして展示用アートを制作しています。また、他のアーティストとコラボしてバンドのアルバムジャケットやTシャツ、ロゴなどのデザインも手掛けています。（http://extra-vitamins.com/）

– なぜArt Book Fairに参加するのですか？

SF Art Book Fairは私達が初めて参加したブックフェアでしたが、私達の作品を楽しんでくれる人達との新しい出会いや、友人でもあるcommuneやElevator Teeth、そしてEndless Editionsなど、他の出展者とのコミュニケーションを楽しみにしていました。

– SFABF17で新しくリリースしたものはありますか？

私たちは、新しく3種のブックをリリースしました。一つはKyleが郊外で撮った奇妙で面白い光景の写真をフューチャーしたKOOLという写真集で、二つめは子供達の想像やサイケデリックさにインスパイアされた “Sometimes I Feel Very Happy”というイラストレーションブックです。それと、Stencil Bookの新しいエディションもリリースしました。

– SFABF17でお気に入りだったブースは？

すごく沢山ありました！中でも私達のお気に入りは、Catalogue Library、Unity Press、Martian Press、そしてStripe SFです。

– SFABF17で何かジンやブックを購入しましたか？

いくつかすごく良いジンとブックを購入しました。お気に入りは、初版となったFranchiseで、興味深いアートのコレクションとバスケットボールに関する記事が載っていたからです。Catalogue Library が出版したEd Davisのクールな作品が載っている青いリソグラフのzine『Of the Telescope』そして、人々が愛し合っている様子が面白く綺麗に描かれているイラストレーションが載ったJeffery Cheungの”A couple of the unity zines”もお気に入りです。

– 次のプランは何ですか？

9月のNYABFでも出展する予定です。今、新しいTシャツをデザイン中で、フルカラーのリソグラフのジンも制作中です。来年はTABFにも参加したいです！

– Please introduce your publisher.

Extra Vitamins is a graphic design studio run by Julia Belamarich and Kyle Warfield. We are based in Denver, Colorado, USA. We make zines, clothing, and exhibit art. We also collaborate with others by designing album artwork, t-shirts, logos, and more.

– Why do you participate in Art Book Fairs?

SFABF was our first art book fair that we’ve tabled at. We were excited to meet new people who enjoy our work and connect with other exhibitors, like our friends at Commune, Elevator Teeth, and Endless Editions.

– What is your newest titles?

We released 3 new publications at SFABF. One is a photo book called KOOL, featuring photos Kyle took of peculiar and funny sightings in the urban environment. Another is an illustrated book inspired by children’s imagery and psychedelics, called Sometimes I Feel Very Happy. We also released a new edition of our stencil book, As It Is.

– Tables you like at SF Art Book Fair 2017 ?

There were so many great tables! Our favorites include: Catalogue, Unity Press, Martian Press, and Stripe SF.

– Did you get any zines/books at SFABF17?

We got quite a few awesome zines and books. Here’s a selection of favorites: The first issue of Franchise, because it has a collection of interesting art and writing about basketball. Of the Telescope by Catalogue is a blue riso zine with cool artwork by Braindead. A couple of the unity zines by Jeffrey Cheung with funny and beautiful illustrations of people loving each other.

– What is your next plan?

We’ll be exhibiting at the New York Art Book Fair in September! We’re designing new shirts and making our first full-color riso zine. And we hope to exhibit at the Tokyo Art Book Fair next year!
